Zipper maintenance for longer life
Regular maintenance of zips can significantly extend their life and prevent many wear and tear problems. It is important to clean your zipper regularly, using a damp cloth or toothbrush. This will remove dirt and dust that can build up in the teeth and zipper mechanism. Lubricating the lock with products such as bar soap or vaseline can help to keep it running smoothly.
Simple repair tricks for zips
When a zip starts to give you problems, there are a few simple solutions that can be applied before you decide to replace it. One is to gently move the zipper up and down to check that it is not blocked by a bent tooth. If the teeth are slightly deformed, they can be gently straightened with small pliers. Another common problem is a zipper that jams, which can often be solved by applying a thin layer of soap or vaseline to its surface.
Before placing your clothes in the washing machine, make sure all zips are fully fastened to prevent catching on other items. If possible, turn the garment inside out. This will minimise the exposure of the zipper to damage. Using a mesh laundry bag for items with delicate or protruding zips can also prevent them from catching or tangling with other clothes.
What to do when a zip repair fails?
If all attempts to repair the zipper fail, it may need to be replaced.
If the zipper itself has been damaged – for example, it has broken and is not holding the zipper, simply buy a new one (obtainable from haberdasheries or online) that matches in size and colour. Remove the broken mechanism and then fit a new one, remembering to sew the ends of the zipper carefully.
If the zipper is damaged, e.g. the teeth are broken, it will probably require replacing the entire zipper. Here we advise you to leave the already damaged garment in the hands of an expert.
