Sewing on new buttons – not so difficult

Changing the buttons on your clothes is a simple but effective way to give them new life. Replacing standard buttons with more distinctive ones can completely change the character of a garment. An example of this is a plain blazer which, thanks to new, elegant buttons, gains in appearance and becomes more personal and unique.

It’s a great way to revive an old wardrobe without a lot of expense. However, the choice of the right button should not be haphazard, as attention should be paid to the material, colour and size so that it perfectly matches the fabric and style of the garment.

How to sew on a button by yourself?

Sewing on a button is a basic skill worth mastering to quickly repair your favourite clothes. If a button falls off, all you need is a needle and thread to make the repair yourself. Start by choosing a thread that matches the colour of the fabric of the garment and finish with a knot. Holding the button in place, insert the needle from the left side of the fabric so that you hit one of the buttonholes. Then aim the needle at the other hole and poke through the fabric with it, returning to the starting point from which you started. Repeat until you feel the button is sufficiently attached to the fabric. Each time, try to aim for the same places where the needle went through the material. This will keep the stitch looking aesthetically pleasing on the inside of the fabric. Remember to leave a small gap between the button and the fabric to make fastening easier

Personalisation of garments with buttons

Buttons are not just a practical part of clothing, they can also have a decorative function, adding character and style to a garment. When choosing buttons, consider what effect you want to achieve. Do you want the button to be subtle and elegant, or to provide a distinctive accent? Buttons can also reflect hobbies or interests – for example, those in the shape of anchors will go well with a nautical style. You can experiment with different materials and shapes, such as metal, wood or plastic, to find the perfect match for your wardrobe.

Remember that buttons are like jewellery for clothes – they can completely change the character of clothes and make an ordinary garment into something special. They have tremendous transformative power and are a simple way to express your individuality through your clothing. Whether you opt for a subtle change or bold, statement pieces, each modification can add new life to your clothes and make you feel like you have a whole new wardrobe.
